In an interview with "The Guardian" Michael Cragg asked, "I was intrigued by this lyric from the new song Can’t Pin Me Down: “Do you really want me to write a feminist anthem / I’m happy cooking dinner in the kitchen for my husband.” Tell me a bit more about it."
Marina replied, "Well I got married last year! No, I didn’t. It’s about people trying to define who you are. It’s about women, mainly. It’s about what people expect you to be or who they think you are, when actually they have no f***ing idea. People don’t know who I am and so as an artist that’s really frustrating because your whole aim is for people to understand what you’re trying to express. Am I feminist though? F***, yes. But even with feminism it’s not about being independent the whole time. There’s nothing wrong with being a housewife."
Marina's song "Sex Yeah" explores the strict gender roles of society along with the notions of good and evil.
"Sex Yeah" by Marina and The Diamonds
Sex, sex, sex, sex, sex, sex, sex, sex Yeah
Sex, sex, sex, sex, sex, sex, sex, sex, sex (La la la)
Nothing is provocative anymore/Even for kids/No room for imagining/'Cause everyone's seen everything/Question what the TV tells you/Question what a pop star sells you
Question mom and question dad/Question good and question bad
If history could set you free (from who you were supposed to be)/If sex in our society (didn't tell a girl who she would be)/'Cause all my life I've tried to fight what history has given me
Sex, sex, sex, sex, sex, sex, sex, sex Yeah
Sex, sex, sex, sex, sex, sex, sex, sex, sex (La la la)
If women were religiously/Recognized sexually/We wouldn't have to feel the need/To show our ass-ets to feel free/Been there, done that/Got the t-shirt/Sold my soul and yeah the truth hurt/Tired image of a star/Acting naughtier than we really are
If history could set you free (from who you were supposed to be)/If sex in our society (didn't tell a guy who he should be)/'Cause all my life I've tried to fight what history has given me
Sex, sex, sex, sex, sex, sex, sex, sex Yeah
Sex, sex, sex, sex, sex, sex, sex, sex, sex (La la la)
All my life I've felt it deep inside of me/All this time was fighting for what I believe/All my life I've tried to hide what history has given me
If history could set you free (from who you were supposed to be)/If sex in our society (didn't tell a guy who he should be)/'Cause all my life I've tried to fight what history has given me
Sex, sex, sex, sex, sex, sex, sex, sex Yeah
